WHY ?? Because... YOU COULD LOOSE MONEY IF YOU DON'T
MANY COMPLAINTS ARE FILED EACH YEAR.
One of the most common situations is when a "roofer" cannot be located when a concern develops with the roof. If there is a concern with a roof installed by a member you have more than a telephone number to rely on. You have the assurance that the contractor has met the qualifications required by the Association.
The Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association Inc. has rigid standards for professional roofing contractors. Only those who meet these standards can qualify for a Membership. These standards are YOUR best protection. Should you have a legitimate concern with a member you have the right to file a complaint with the Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association
BEWARE OF THE RISKS!
In some cases non-member roofers may not have worker's compensation insurance, or liability insurance they do not pay City, Provincial, or Federal Taxes, nor secure Permits when required.
All of the above can cause YOU grave consequences! When the roofer is not properly registered you are considered to be their employer. You can be personally liable for employment taxes. If an accident or injury occurs you could be held liable for medical and/or other costs. You could also be exposed to future lawsuits. Roofing is a dangerous business! Don't assume potentially devastating liability by hiring a non-member contractor.
SELECTING A CONTRACTOR
Your home is an important and valuable asset, you should not trust just anyone to roof it. Before hiring a roofing contractor you should follow these simple steps:
- Have the roofing contractor provide you with a list of references, including former customer in your area.
- Check the roofing contractors qualifications. Make sure all the registrations are current and in good standing.
- Check the contractor's complaint record with the BBB.
The number of complaints should not eliminate the contractor from consideration unless it is extreme. The manner in which the complaints were resolved is much more important and will help determine if you want to do business with this company.
- Inquire as to the contractor's Insurance coverage..
Does, it have both worker's compensation and liability Insurance and will it provide you with certificates or Insurance?

ASK THE CONTRACTOR
This checklist should help you find a licensed and qualified roofing contractor:
- Is the contractor a member of the Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association and are they current and in good standing"
- Is the contractor's complaint history acceptable?
- Does the contractor have worker's compensation and liability insurance?
- Will the contractor provide evidence of registration?
- Can the contractor provide you with a list of references?
- Does the contractor use a written contract that includes the scope of work and terms of payment?
- Will the contractor provide you with its Workmanship Warranty?
- Will the contractor provide you with a valid manufacturer's warranty?
- Will the contractor use quality #1 shingles meeting CSA approval? (Seconds - do not meet code for your residence and are not insurable, they carry no warranties)
Members of The Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association Inc. will satisfy the above.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Be cautious if a contractor asks for an exorbitant amount as a down payment. Reasonable down payments are often required and are quite acceptable for material commitments as well as for the contractor's own security.
Be certain the contractor furnishes a written contract that Includes the specific work to be performed, where the work Will be performed, terms of payment, warranties and guarantees offered and their conditions. Be aware of your hold back rights.
DO NOT RELY ON VERBAL PROMISES
If there is a problem with any of the above items, do not hire the contractor in question. Protect yourself and your assets. If a problem arises with your contractor that is not resolved yon can contact the Department of Consumers & Corporate Affairs. |
